Nestled within the South Village mixed-use development at the former Kirrawee brick pit in southern Sydney, the Pipe Kiln No. 1 exhibition transforms an industrial relic into a subtle yet powerful architectural and interpretive landmark.
Drawing directly from on-site materials, a raw brick wall crafted from excavated remnants frames the kiln ruins — their arched flue and hearth preserved as an anchor in the narrative. Glass display cases hold recovered artefacts like fragments of pipes and kiln furniture, alongside a 3D-printed steel mini-model of the 1930s site securely mounted to the existing balustrade.
Together, the exhibition and signage system unite historical excavation, adaptive reuse, and exhibition design, giving new life to heritage: a raw, industrial pavilion that speaks to both place and memory.
